Gail, tell me how it all started?
I started my working life as a research chemist mixing chemicals and looking at endless data churned out from the most complex machinery. I thought that was fun and then I discovered the world of business.
I got a job at the Management School at the University of Queensland and from there worked in other universities. I was working with Noel Lindsay and we noticed that there were very few entrepreneurs in the postgraduate classes.
So we decided to set up Achaeus to help entrepreneurs and high growth companies grow and expand. That was in 1994.
The business principles taught in universities are very valuable but that they needed to be re-packaged for high growth companies that have little time.
So we re-wrote the text books. They were too voluminous and theory driven for fast moving entrepreneurs. We produced our own Entrepreneur’s Manual. This has since been published in the USA for the MBA market. There is some sweet irony in that one!
We also reduced very complex theories to simple tools that can be understood and applied without a deep understanding of the underlying theory. We took the essence of business principles and simplified the processes to suit time poor managers.
We established Achaeus in South Africa in the mid 1990s. We licensed bachelor and postgraduate programs from Bond University and established Bond University as one of the leaders in the market.
Since then we have had the privilege to work with some of the best people and companies, those with the determination to succeed, those that have the passion to get things done.
We never stop working on improving our systems and processes. We debrief constantly and we change and improve so that our clients get the best possible guidance. This business world we live in can be challenging but its also tons of fun.
